Canine Flea Infection Symptoms | Dog Flea Infection Symptoms
It is easy to spot a flea infestation; dog owners will be able, without difficulty, to see fleas jumping and crawling on their dog’s skin or on the teeth of a flea comb. The added presence of tiny dots resembling black pepper (flea feces, commonly called “flea dust”) and table salt (flea eggs) in and around their dog’s sleeping area confirms the presence of a flea infestation. If you are not sure whether those black flecks you see are flea dust or common household dirt, place some of the flecks on a paper towel or stand your dog on a white sheet, brush her and sprinkle water on the flecks that drop off the dog and onto the sheet. Flea dust, which contains dehydrated blood, will turn red within approximately one minute of re-hydration.
Flea bite hypersensitivity manifests with intense itching, inflamed skin and skin lesions (small red papules, or bumps) that occur mainly on a dog’s rump and tail base, under the legs and on the stomach and groin. Affected dogs will bite at the afflicted area or areas to the point of hairlessness if the condition is left untreated; you will notice that the exposed skin has become scaly and dry. The skin may actually break down to a raw, crusted and infected spot on the surface of the dog’s body that eventually turns dark and thick.
Flea infections can also be found when the bite area begins to produce lesions that ooze (lick granuloma) from the animals constant licking and biting. Their reactions are understandable but unfortunately the action only provides temporary relief and is more likely to cause more damage and infection. Hot spots on the face or hips caused by scratching will lead to severe skin damage. Left untreated the redden areas can break open and become infected by various environmental invaders such as bacteria, toxic chemicals from lawn and garden pesticides or just dirt. Once the raw places have developed into lacerations the opened skin no longer provides protection to the body allowing pathogenic organisms to penetrate and weakening the canine’s defenses and creating a scenario for greater illnesses.
It is not hard to see how one little flea can cause a lot of misery for a dog and their family.
